Biography:

Dr. Ashley J. Holmes leads the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) in supporting effective, innovative, and scholarly teaching that engages students in meaningful learning experiences at Oregon State University. As AVP for Teaching and Learning, Ashley collaborates with units across campus and works closely with units in Academic Affairs.

Ashley's research focuses on place-based learning, high-impact practices, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. She recently published the monograph Learning on Location: Place-Based Approaches for Diverse Learners in Higher Education (Routledge / Elon University Center for Engaged Learning, 2023), which provides a framework for deepening student learning through place-making practices of writing, walking, and civic engagement. In 2024, she also co-edited the collection Learning from the Mess: Method/ological Praxis in Rhetoric and Writing Studies (WAD Clearinghouse).

Her first book Public Pedagogy in Composition Studies (2016) was published through the Conference on College Composition and Communication's Studies in Writing and Rhetoric Series, and her recent articles and chapters have appeared in The International Journal of Students as Partners, College English, The WAC Journal, Composition Forum, and the edited collections Writing Beyond the University and Campus Conversations.

Prior to joining OSU in 2024, Ashley was faculty in English at Georgia State University for 12 years, where she taught undergraduate and graduate classes in composition theory and pedagogy, research methods, public rhetoric, and digital writing. At GSU, she also served as Interim Director of Teaching Effectiveness in the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Online Education (2023-2024) and as Director of the Writing Across the Curriculum Program (2018-2023).
