Faculty Teaching Fellowships Program Overview
The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) is a leader in supporting teaching excellence and quality teaching across OSU's colleges and modalities. CTL invites applications for academic faculty teaching fellowships each academic year. CTL Fellows serve as a vital bridge between centralized instructional support and colleges, departments, and other units on campus. These fellowships provide an opportunity for instructional faculty to increase their educational leadership skills and deliver program initiatives that pave the way for teaching excellence across OSU.
CTL Fellows will be involved in coordination, design, and facilitation of faculty development around effective teaching and learning at OSU. Fellows will support CTL's strategic goals of enhancing student success and developing a culture of teaching innovation at OSU. Fellows will also have opportunities to participate in leadership meetings and engage with colleagues in the CTL and related academic and administrative units. Note that this is not a research fellowship. (See SoTL Scholars for research opportunities.)
Fellowship Categories and Areas of Focus
Teaching Excellence Fellows (up to 4 fellowships available)
AI in Teaching and Learning Fellows (up to 2 fellowships available, supported by OSU Libraries Gray Family Fund)
We invite applicants to select one of the categories above and identify a specific project idea or area(s) of focus for the fellowship and to which you would be interested in developing resources or leading programming. Please align your project/area with one or more of the principles of the Quality Teaching Framework, which defines a quality teacher as someone who:
- Champions a culture of diverse, equitable and inclusive learning;
- Practices teaching as a discipline; and
- Mentors and advises learners.
Some areas in which we are especially interested in working with CTL Fellows include teaching strategies for student success/Every Student Graduates; the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning; experiential learning; and undergraduate research.
Expectations
- Work closely with CTL team members - as well as pedagogy partners in the Division of Academic Affairs, Ecampus, Academic Technologies, and the OSU Libraries - on teaching and learning supports for faculty and GTAs teaching in a range of modalities across colleges at OSU.
- Develop resources, lead and/or co-facilitate CTL faculty development programming related to the fellowship project/area of focus. This could include workshops or Sparkshops, a faculty learning community or community of practice, a pedagogy book club, or other teaching and learning related projects.
- Based on the fellowship area of focus, be available for occasional 1:1 consultations with instructors or to give a presentation tailored for a specific department.
- Attend CTL team meetings throughout the academic year.
- After selection, submit a finalized CTL fellowship project plan for approval, provide updates and meeting internal CTL deadlines for scheduling and advertising, lead a session for a university-wide teaching event such as the Quality Teaching Symposium, and submit a 1-to 2-page end-of-year fellowship report in June.
Terms of Fellowship Appointment
CTL Fellowship appointments will be made for the academic year. The expectation is that fellows will dedicate approximately 2 to 4 hours per week to the fellowship throughout the academic year.
Once fellows are selected for the above opportunities, CTL staff will coordinate with the fellow’s supervisor via an MOU that outlines the details of the appointment. The $10,000 in support typically involves overload payment, distributed across three terms. Note: Fellows who take the appointment as overload payment cannot hold other overload appointments during the fellowship.
Application
Submit the following to [email protected] with the subject heading "CTL [AI or Teaching Excellence] Fellowship Application":
- A letter of intent (2-page max) that does the following:
- Clearly identifies the specific fellowship category for which you are applying;
- Describes a specific pedagogical area of focus for the fellowship that connects to the Quality Teaching Framework and is feasible in scope and timeline for completion within the academic year;
- Explains your qualifications, interests, and professional goals relative to the fellowship, including demonstrated evidence of teaching excellence and prior engagement in faculty development.
- CV
- Strong endorsement of your application from your unit or college leadership. (This could be a saved email from your supervisor or unit/college leadership stating they strongly support your application.)
Selection Process and Criteria
CTL Fellows will be selected based on the criteria below. A selection committee comprised of staff from the CTL, previous CTL Fellows, and the OSU Libraries will review applications and make recommendations to the Associate Vice Provost for Faculty Excellence, who will make final selections and extend fellowship offers. Applicants will be notified before the end of the academic year.
- Demonstrated evidence of teaching excellence, such as curricular innovation or (re)development, grants, awards, fellowships, student feedback, or leadership or service related to teaching and learning.
- Engagement in faculty development, demonstrated through prior participation in CTL or other pedagogical faculty development initiatives.
- Clear, well-articulated fellowship project proposal that is feasible in scope and timeline for completion within the academic year.
- Alignment with OSU's Quality Teaching framework, with clear potential for the proposed project or area of focus to model, amplify, and/or further support application of the framework in instructional contexts.
